Barack Obama is the first black president of United States of America. The American society has changed the last 50 years. In the past nobody would have thought of a colored president and the blacks was seen as people with less "worth". Many blacks were killed in the past just for being black, and there still is some of this segregation in some places of America.
In the movie Mississippi Burning, three civil right workers were murdered. Many people wanted the blacks dead, like the Ku Klux Klan. You could die if you fought for rights when you were black. The society has changed since then. Martin Luther King Jr. had a great influence on the American society. He was a black man who fought for more rights. Because of him and many other freedom fighters, the American society is like it is today. Now the blacks have more rights, and America has a black president which would never have happend in the past.
Barack Obama is worldwide known just for being the first black president. Many do not want him as the president, mostly because he is black. There still are some people who hate blacks and look down on them, so American society is still not "perfect". In the movie, there was much segregation in Mississippi. The blacks and whites had different rights, and the blacks were also treated in a racist fashion. Segregation is still gone now, but there still is some, most in the southern states. This is because in the past, many blacks were used as slaves in the southern part of America. Therefore many whites still think of blacks as people with less "worth". The blacks are treated with indirect racism. The whites for example do not want to communicate or live near the blacks. The society has changed, that is for sure. A black president is a good sign on how the community has changed, and also shows the equality between blacks and whites. The society can still change and be better though, but that will the future show us.
